Security Tips for Travelers
  • FAA regulations now require that all checked luggage be matched to an actual traveler on every flight.
  • While "Positive Bag Matching" could be useful in preventing bombing attempts, the latest regulations do not require PBM for connecting flights. This does little good for sophisticated terrorists. Also, this regulation does nothing to prevent suicide bombing attacks.
  • If you are being dropped off at the airport by car, try this trick: Get out at Arrivals during the morning hours and Departures during the afternoon hours. During the mornings, the Departures drop off area is usualy more crowded, while it is usually less crowded during the evenings.
  • Gauge your arrival at the airport based on your experience with the flight. If you have been traveling on a flight every week for the last two months, and have had no extra-long security delays, you may try to arrive closer to the departure time.
  • For those flights or airports for which you have little experience, its best to give yourself at least one and a half hours.
  • Avoid a last minute rush - get your seat assignments and go through security as soon as possible.
  • Chances are that you will be waiting at the airport, either in a security line, a ticket line, a boarding line, or just plane waiting for a delayed flight. Plan on it as the rule, not the exception. Wear comfortable shoes and bring books or work along to keep your attention.
  • Do not take any sharp metal objects at all. No scissors, knitting needles, nail files. Avoid the hassle of security scrutiny and the loss of the items by just not bringing them with you. While nail clippers are generally OK if they do not contain file attachments, the procedures are still very inconsistent at most airports. One reader reported that his tiny keychain wrench without sharp edges was taken recently. Better safe than sorry -- if it is a small metal object and not necessary for your trip, then leave it home.
  • Mark ALL luggage, both carry-on and checked, with your full name, current address, and destination address. Put this information both on the inside and the outside of your luggage. This is vital to ensure the success of Positive Bag Matching.
  • If you need to make ticket changes or payment in person at the airlines, try their city offices rather than the airport.
